Political Manifesto

I've been provoked by my friend Andy to give a list of policies I'd like introduced in the UK and EU.

Voting System

My preferred voting system is Range Voting. An interview with William Poundstone convinced me.

End the drugs prohibition

Software patents

There is a move to make software patentable in the EU. I believe that this would be detrimental to the EU economy. I support the campaign against software patents.

Free Markets

I would like the EU to unilaterally abolish the Common Agricultural Policy, end all subsidies and bring down trade barriers. Protectionism is bad for the EU because it pushes up taxes and makes food and goods more expensive. EU protectionism is bad for poor countries because they are prevented from competing on an equal footing, and so can't lift themselves out of poverty. I support the work of the WTO.

Building area tax

My friend Andy (him again) sent me an article from our local paper in which it was claimed that there was a housing shortage and so more houses should be built. It's the same thoughout the UK. But is there a housing shortage? I think people aren't making enough use of the living space we've already got. My solution is to tax the owners of buildings based on the area of land they take up, minus an allowance for each person who lives there. A tower block filled with people would have very low tax and a mansion with one person living there would be highly taxed. The effect would be that people would live more densely, and new houses wouldn't have to be built.

Energy

I think that the UK's liberalized energy market is a good thing. I would allow the building of nuclear fission power stations as long as it wasn't subsidised by government. Any company wanting to build a nuclear power station should pay in full for insurance and the storage of waste.

World Government

I'm in favour of a World Government formed from a directly elected parliament. The problems that need a world government are:

  • CO2 pollution
  • Overfishing
  • Wars between nations.
  • Free trade

TaxBack

CO2 TaxBack
Road Pricing
Tax

Legalize Prostitution

Patient choice in the NHS

Disposal Tax

State funding of political parties
